Going through my Photo Library and my Posts I noticed I have loads of photos from the beautiful Oasis of Siwa, many of them from my first visit there, when I went on a trip with some friends to the place that then became my favourite spot in the world!
And then I noticed that only that little of them is shared on my blog, so I thought I’d share my favorites of Siwa, it is more than just a desert

Cold Lake in the great sand sea
This is not an ocean, it is just the deep side of the Cold Freezing Lake in the Siwan Desert.

4WD Desert Safari
This is the best activity to be done in Siwa, 4WD Safari. Get that adrenaline running in your blood stream with some of the best desert drivers in the world that are used to driving in the extremely soft sands of the Great Sand Sea.

Sunsets in the Desert
Watch an amazing sunset in the desert and notice those rays playing with the colors of the sand, it is just breathtaking!

Now let’s move inside the oasis itself…
It also has something to offer to history junkies!
Gabal Al-Mawta (Mountain of the dead)
I am not a ‘huge’ fan of history but I do enjoy knowing the fact that those lands were walked on thousands of years ago, and they buried their dead here, obviously in those holes all over the mountain and the neighboring lands. Read more specific details about this mountain dating back to the Ptolemaic period here.

Temple of the sun
Dedicated to the Egyptian Sun God “Amon-Ra”, this temple is also called Temple of Amon, which was built during the middle Pharaonic ages. Read more about this temple, and Siwa, and the sacredness of this place here.

Sunrise from above Dakrour Mountain
Watch Sunrise from above Dakrour Mountain in Siwa, which is considered the highest point in the oasis, and watch how the sun lights up the millions of palms trees in the oasis.

A Street in Siwa
This is how most streets in Siwa look like, specially in the outskirts of the oasis.
Yes, the oasis is extremely small yet it has a downtown and a souk (market) and it has outskirts full of palm trees and farms!

Sunset from our ride
This is a random sunset shot from above our means of transportation in Siwa, a small truck to accommodate our number back in that trip

Sunset from Fetnas gardens
Fetnas gardens is a must visit when in siwa, you have to go and watch the sunset over the lake from there while enjoying a shisha and a mint tea. And if you’re not in a hurry, you can hang out with Omran, the garden’s owner, around the fire later.
Actually, hanging out with Siwan people is one of the fun activities to do there, even to an Egyptian like me, their culture and language fascinates me – they have another language, Tamazigh. But I’ll rant about the Siwan people in another post…
Did you like this post? Are you thinking of visiting Siwa? If you plan to go there just let me know, I’d be happy to join you every time! :D

I went to Siwa but sadly only for two days. I didn’t see all this. I did walk around the town and did the safari 4×4 tour in the desert. Loved everything. I really wanna go back to Siwa with more time to explore deeper. Looks like I missed alot. Great shots here.
Thanks Jaime! Rumor has it that you’re coming back to Egypt (It’s not rumor, I read your comment on WaderingEarl.com post
). When you’re back you must definitely go to Siwa again, it’s not a 1 time visit place!
Amazing photographs, especially of the desert! I would love to go someday. I’m sure it is surreal to see the sands change at sunset.
It is! I can’t wait to be there again next week! The views in the desert is always breathtaking at any time of the day, the vastness of the place is just humbling! And even during the night – if you’re lucky to be there on a full moon – it’s like a neon lit room! Just amazing!
Beautiful photos! You’re lucky to see two things I’ve read about and wanted to see are deserts and oasis.
Sheila, you must visit Egypt and specifically Siwa…It will make those two dreams come true and you will love it!
Spent a beautiful week in Siwa – this after over a decade of wanting to go there. I chose it as the spot where I proposed. One of the most beautiful places I have ever been to; it would make me sad to think I wouldn’t ever make it back there.
Great shots.
Why should you think you can’t go back there? Siwa is always a safe place with very welcoming locals! I do think you should re-consider visiting!
Thanks for your comment Robin
Oh no I didn’t mean safety or security. Just time and money and so on…I hope I do make it back there, and also to Cairo; a city with plenty of problems but magnificent all the same.
Nice photo essay, but it brings back some bad memories. I walked out of the oasis and into the desert, and then the sun went down and it got dark really fast and I had a hard time finding my way back to Siwa. Really scary.
That’s scary
I’ve never been in the desert all alone, let alone walking
but I got injured in the desert before…
I hope the rest of your time there wasn’t as scary
