As I have probably mentioned a gazillion times on this website, I am working in the Egyptian touristy city of Sharm el Sheikh in our family owned pharmacy. The working schedule is usually 1 month of work followed by a week or 10 days off, where I finally go back to my home city, Alexandria, spend a couple of days with my friends getting drunk in Cairo, or travel around to other destinations in Egypt like Siwa Oasis.
This month, however, it was Easter, and the Egyptian “Sham el Neseem” festival, and I spent both of them working just like any other normal day, from 3 pm to 3 am; after all it is a high season week and I couldn’t just take those days off.
And as luck would have it (good luck, let’s say), my friends back in Alexandria also couldn’t do any traveling during those festival days as half of the day is obligatory to be spent with family. So they decided to do an after feast celebration, where they would go to “El-Ein El-Sokhna” (Sokhna for short) for a couple of days.
Sokhna is a very popular get away/weekend destination for Cairo-ans. It is a warm beach destination (El-Ein El-Sokhna actually translates to “the hot well”) that is one hour away from Cairo’s outskirts.
Yes you guessed it right; I have decided I’ll go meet them there!
I’ve got a very long trip ahead of me though to get there. First of all, I’ll take an overnight Bus to Cairo, at 3 am, arriving at 9-ish am. By that time, supposedly my friends will be awake and ready, they will pick me up from the bus stop and we will head to Sokhna.
A: where I am hile writing this post.
B: where I will meet my friends, Cairo
C: our final destination
Too perfect to be true? I know my friends won’t be awake by that time and that I’ll wait for at least one, maybe two or three hours for them to get up and get ready and finally meet up with me!
So a rough time plan would be as follows:
from A to B: 6 hours on the bus, leave at 3 am, arrive at 9 am.
At B: Wait for my friends, knowing them for the past life time, I will wait from 9 am till 11 am, 2 hours at any cafe
From B to C: 1-2 hours
So I’m supposed to be there by noon…
Hopefully by the time you will be reading this post though, I’ll be bathing in the warm waters of the Red Sea.
I will only spend there one night though, on Thursday I am supposed to be on my way back to Sharm. How? I have no plan/idea on what transportation will be available from there. Given that Sokhna is not a real city, it is merely a collection of hotels by the beach, and a highway, I am not sure if there is even a bus stop there. And if there is, I am sure there are no busses to Sharm el Sheikh, as I asked about direct transportation from here and there wasn’t any.
So my options will be one of the following, either head back to Cairo, and from there take another bus to Sharm el Sheikh. Or the shorter direction, and the one I know nothing about even more, is head to Suez City and find a bus from there to Sharm. (refer to previous map)
Whether I’ll do this or that I am not sure yet, I will see when I’m there which one is looking more trustable.
But my question here comes as, is it really worth all the transportation I’ll be taking to spend just 24 hours in a place? Oh the things I would do to have a drink with my friends! Sometimes it just feels too much. I hope it is worth it after all.
Will be updating you, maybe even through twitter while I’m there if there was a Wi-Fi connection.
Have you ever gone that far, or even further, to just have one day of fun with friends? I know many must have done even more, especially if you have a boring job like mine! Share your stories.
