Although beautiful, amazing green mountains and perfect clear blue waters, and I also won’t deny that it is here that I have seen the best sunsets in all of Thailand so far, but Koh Phangan still disappointed me.
It is just the vibe that I didn’t really enjoy. I knew that Koh Phangan is the party island, but too much partying isn’t always so much fun, at least for me.
Don’t get me wrong, I love a good party every now and then, but when it is every day, it gets a little boring. Especially when it seems like this is all what people are doing. Getting totally wasted and finding drunken partners for the night.
Again, don’t misunderstand me, I still like to drink, I don’t mind getting drunk, even every day, but I’d rather get drunk while sitting on a table with some people and having a good conversation, which can go totally stupid or really deep.
But this doesn’t happen in Koh Phangan, it seems that everyone here is looking forward to drink, dance, drink more, have some “happy shakes”, dance some more, and in the morning everyone looking unhappy with a bitter hangover, which they drink it away to get ready for the following night.
Maybe I’m a bit boring? I know many people do enjoy this, and it is their right and personal choices, but for the Middle Eastern inside me, I’d still rather be drinking with a good company and a good conversation than drinking and jumping around.
Maybe go partying every now and then, every couple of days or even every week is more than enough for me, but after several nights in Koh Phangan, and seeing that this is simply all that is happening on the island every other night, it is getting boring.
I am really disappointed in Koh Phangan; especially that I am here for my last few days in Thailand; I didn’t want this to be my last memory of Thailand. I really enjoyed the North of Thailand, the relaxed atmosphere and chilled vibe between the people, locals and travelers. And this is also what I have heard that Koh Tao is like. Too bad I don’t have enough time – or money – to move on to Koh Tao before leaving Thailand.
I will definitely be back to Thailand, maybe next year or maybe later, all I know is that I won’t be in Koh Phangan again for more than two nights. I might come back for a full moon, a half moon or a black moon party, but I wouldn’t stay longer than this, I’d move on to the next place and find the good relaxed atmosphere I’m looking for while traveling.
Have you been to Koh Phangan? Did you enjoy it or did it disappoint you like it did to me? Is there lots that I am missing on on this island and do you think I should give it another chance?
