October 1st, 2012. Today is my birthday!
Sitting at home after finishing my classes for the day, I started thinking about how lucky I am!
One year ago, today, I was celebrating my birthday in Finisterre, Spain, with some of the most amazing people I’ve met in my life, after walking the Camino de Santiago, all the way to Finisterre like a real pilgrim!
The Camino de Santiago has been a changing point in my life. Yes I have been day dreaming about traveling before I started the Camino. But actually walking, and going against the odds that the skinny me would be able to actually walk 500 miles?
At that moment I knew I can accomplish!
A little nice story from my last birthday
I had a flight on the second of October morning from Santiago de Compostela to Barcelona to meet up with my family. Unfortunately when I reached Finisterre, I figured out that the earliest bus on the 2nd will leave after my flight departures…
I was depressed!
After all of that long 36 days walk, making amazing friends and having wonderful experiences, I won’t get to spend my birthday with them, and instead I’ll have to leave on my birthday’s evening and spend the night alone in Santiago?!
I walked back into my hostel to pack my backpack and go, when I found a young chap whom I have walked with for a good 2 weeks at the beginning of the Camino, but then he had to go faster and I had to go slower. He said he’s been waiting for me to celebrate my birthday!
I told him that I had to leave and he drastically changed the events!
In a minute he talked to the hostel’s owner, arranged that tomorrow morning I will get my private ride all the way to Santiago de Compostela airport!
Well he’s Mexican so he could speak Spanish! Plus the fact that he had the talent of talking anyone into anything!
That night I spent the most amazing Birthday I had ever had, making fire and drinking on Cape Finisterre, with many pilgrims singing Happy Birthday to me in languages I have never even heard before!
One year later
Fast forwarding one year, October 1st, 2012, it is my birthday again. And again, I am lucky to be celebrating it at another end of the world!
This year I am celebrating my birthday in Indonesia!
And although right now I am sitting at home alone, I won’t deny that I enjoyed a couple of beers last night to my honor with some friends. And that next weekend will be a belated birthday party for me!
Am I depressed that I am spending it all alone?
Not at all! I thought I’d be, but honestly, I have this overwhelming feeling of happiness! A feeling that I had been looking for when I was back in Egypt hating every day of my job!
Looking at my options, and at my current bank account, it is most likely that I’ll be heading to Egypt once this internship is over, and that I’ll be working in the pharmacy again. But again, I have this feeling deep inside that something will work out!
My resolution for the coming year
Nothing in the world will stop me.
I have just read the Motivational Monday post by Anthony from ManVsClock (Congratulations and Happy First Freedom Anniversary man!), and I do have the same feeling. I know money (and for me my passport too) are great restrictions of pursuing my dream life, but I am promising myself that I will do whatever it takes!
And this, I do not promise, but I deeply hope, that by October 1st, 2013, I’ll be celebrating my birthday, again somewhere different in the world, with an even deeper hope of not going back home in between those two birthdays!
