Pay it forward, although it is a very common concept, and almost everyone on planet earth knows that they should do good to receive good, Karma, and all those concepts. They are good! They are really good! And I personally believe in them especially after seeing Karma working speedy miracles in front of my eyes.
What I have never thought of is how big is the good you do? Does it really help someone? Is it sustainable good?
The other day I was watching a movie called “Pay It Forward”, as a strong believer in Karma I was surprised that I have never thought of a similar idea. The basic idea of the movie is to totally change the lives of three people – to the better obviously. Eventually, when they get the chance, each one of these three people will do the same, and so on. It’s a network of positive energy passed from one person to the next!
What made me even think more of the idea, is because us, as travelers, always have a good chance of making an impact on people’s live! Starting from trying to bargain for that 50 cents, that will not make a change in your budget but could feed a child in the country you are visiting, to actually taking positive action towards people in the country you are visiting, leaving positive footsteps in your trail!
What I’m thinking of, however, isn’t the small good of leaving a good tip or giving a dollar to a beggar. This is good, but I mean bigger! How long will that dollar keep the beggar alive? One more day…But I want to do him something more sustainable, something that will keep him alive for more than one day. Something that will make him pay it forward to someone else someday! Yes, that big!
And it doesn’t always have to be money. For some people the good they want to receive in their lives is something different. Like that kid that was so happy to be taught English – for free as he didn’t have enough money. Now he’s giving free English courses to students on his village, and I’m sure this act of kindness will be passed forward for even more generations to come!
I will write more on this thought in further posts, I have some other things to say but first I would like to hear your ideas! What do you think you can do, as a traveler, in a country you are visiting, that would change someone’s life? Something that would make them pass the good for someone else when it is their turn to pay it forward?
Share your ideas, things you can do as a person, or even if you need a group of people with you (for something bigger) and maybe we can make a change someday! Let’s see those positive thoughts 🙂
