Right now I am finally following a plan I had some 2 years ago when I just graduated University. I am doing my Master of Science degree, in Europe! Well, in England. But just like last time, 2 years ago, when I was applying, things didn’t go smoothly. I’ll cut the long story short, in every step of my application there was something going on which was out of my hands.
From not having enough money to pay my tuition fees, to being super late on my application, to a revolution that paralyzed my movements and got me stuck in Sharm el Sheikh. Lots of things were happening, with every step I took something else came up. Even when I finally had everything ready, the embassy closed down because of the unrest in Egypt, which delayed me even more.
After all, I was ready, I got my visa and I booked a flight only a few days after it. I couldn’t wait to get on the move again! It has been 9 months since I came back from Indonesia, and I was really itching to see something new!
Back to my flight, it was supposed to leave from Sharm on September 28th at 9 pm, to arrive in Manchester Sunday 2 am, my plan was to wait in the airport till the morning, go spend the day in Manchester, and the night as well, then Monday take the train to Sunderland, where I will be studying for the next year.
But of course, nothing has to go as planned. At 9.10 pm, we were still on the shuttle bus that was supposed to take us to the plane. They took us off the bus again and inside the airport and made us wait. At 9.20, the pilot came and said the flight has to be cancelled today. It will be delayed a full 24 hours. Thank you Easy Jet!
To be honest, they took everyone to a really nice hotel, and treated us with free meals, but it is a full day delay, plus all my hotel and train booking that were made had to be cancelled!
I didn’t have a problem cancelling the hotel, since I was off the weekend, I just emailed the hotel manager and he/she was really nice to accept my request of postponing my booking one day. The train however, I got a refund minus 10 pounds. But that’s fine, better than losing the whole ticket price. Except, that the next train ticket I booked for Tuesday morning had to be the earliest possible, as I had lectures on Tuesday – and I have already missed my first week!
I spent an amazing day in Manchester, I walked around a lot and enjoyed a fairly nice weather to what I was expecting. But waking up the next morning (night?) at 3.30 am to catch a train at 5.40 am was a real problem! Yeah, no much drama to be said, I missed the train. No refund this time. I had to book the next leaving train, and all in all the trains system in England made a 100 pounds from this customer that can’t make up his mind about which train he wants!
All this reminded me of my first solo trip, when the universe was also trying to make me not to travel, and yet I had the time of my life walking el Camino de Santiago. This is what kept me pushing through this time, I know that when things go hard before a trip, then hopefully it is going to be a good one!
Finally I am in Sunderland, for a whole week now. I will update you more on how I like this place, and what is there to do here. My plan is to save up some money and do some traveling around England. Hopefully I’ll be able to follow on this plan.
If you have any recommendation of places to explore around North East England please share them, I honestly have no idea of what’s around me so far!
