Moving to England has been a big step to me so far. On many levels it is changing me and teaching me new things, setting new goals for me and putting me out of my comfort zones. But there is one specific comfort zone I am kicked out of on daily basis now; and this is the weather! At 24 years old, the coldest weather I have experienced was a few days of extremely strong wind and rain every winter, with the temperature dropping to a minimum of 4 or 3 degrees. I would like to note that it is still autumn, we are still in November, and I have crossed that limit many times now here in Northern England! Average temperature these days (especially the past week) was 3 or 4 degrees in the morning. Dropping to ZERO at night and a few nights ago it even went below zero!
I saw SNOW for the first time of my life!
This helps with nothing but making me remember where I was on these days last year, tropical Indonesia, where it was also raining, everyday, but WARM! I miss warmth, kind of. I miss the sun and not having to worry about taking that extra heavy jacket because as soon as the sun sets (sun? yeah some days it gets a bit sunny) it will be freezing again! I am definitely nostalgic to these warm and sunny days.
What added up is seeing an old friend of mine is going to visit Egypt, her first destination is Dahab, and then she will visit Siwa, the black desert and the white desert! Did I ever mention that November/December is the best time of year to visit the Egyptian desert? You get very warm mornings, perfect for whatever adventure you have planned (or unplanned) for the day, and slightly chili nights, perfect for sitting around the fire and having your perfectly cooked on fire dinner. I’ll admit, I am jealous! 😀
One more thought I have is the difference between this coming Christmas and New years, and the past one in 2012. Last Christmas and New Year’s Eve I spend them on Gili Air in Lombok, Indonesia, while this one, I have a trip booked to spend New Year’s Eve in Glasgow, with a couple of days in Edinburgh and Aberdeen!
From an average temperature on New Year’s Eve of 24 degrees, to an average temperature that will probably be around zero. And from having a quick swim and a beer while tanning on the beach on 1/1/2013, to wearing what I think will be all my clothes on 1/1/2014 😀 I am still excited, though. It’s a new experience, new weather, new adventure and new places! I hope the weather will not stop me from enjoying it as much as I did last year.
What weather do you prefer more? And where are you spending Christmas this year? In a snowy or a sunny place?
