In the past year or so, I left Egypt twice. Both times heading to England, the first was supposed to be on the 29th of September, but got delayed for a full day to the 30th of September; I was flying Easy Jet from Sharm el Sheikh to Manchester, to then take a train to Sunderland and start my masters degree in the University of Sunderland. The second flight was from Alexandria to Manchester through Istanbul (Turkish Airlines); this flight was also delayed, only 40 minutes though.
Now delays happen, for technical reasons, problems with the flight preparation, weather conditions…etc. But the reasons both my flights were delayed is beyond imagination. It’s sad and funny at the same time. Funny because the reasons are far too stupid to delay a flight and mess with the world’s air traffic for such reasons, yet sad to see that this is happening in Egypt, and to make me miss my train following my first flight.
So here you go, the two reasons I encountered for my flight delays in Egypt.
The one from Sharm, our pilot got into a fight with a policeman in the airport. Apparently they’ve had several arguments before, and this time both of them were really holding the grudge for each other, they had to go to the police station to sort it out. The flight was scheduled at 9 pm. 9.05 pm we were still at the gate. 9.10 they took us to the shuttle bus to go the plane, we stayed on the bus for 20 minutes then they moved everyone back again inside the terminal and told us the flight will be postponed till the next day at 9 pm, and explained this reason I mentioned earlier!
Because of that delay I almost missed my hotel reservation in Manchester, but luckily when I emailed them they were very nice and said it’s ok, they will just keep my reservation and deposit for the next day. I did miss my train, however, there were 10 pounds cancellation fee, which was ok, but then I booked a train at 4ish am, which of course I missed and had to book the next going train which was about 70 GBP. In total, my trip from Manchester to Sunderland cost 100 GBP.
On the bright side, easyjet booked all the flight passengers a night in an awesome hotel. I got to spend an extra day in warm Egypt in a room with this view:
I didn’t even go back to see my dad again. A) The room was too nice to leave. B) Goodbyes are awkward, so one was enough, didn’t ant to repeat the whole process again.
Moving on, the next flight from Alexandria to Istanbul (to Manchester) was also delayed. A 40 minutes delay.
Picture this, the complete number of people that are to fly from Alexandria to Istanbul standing in a line in front of the gate, and we can see our plane outside on the other side of the glass. We witnessed the luggage being put in it, all cars moving from around it. It’s all set to fly, but the line is not moving.
After some time, and people starting to get pissed and asking so many questions, the reason that was given was “The guy that has the keys for the gate is not here, he’s late for work today.”
What an excuse man!! A whole airport leaves the keys for a gate to a guy who is not at work? The whole airport and head of security and any other department do not have spare keys? It was making everyone furious and laughing at the same time! When the guy finally arrived, 40 minutes later, they didn’t even apologize for the delay 😀
I think it is also worth mentioning that on another instance, while flying home from Barcelona, the flight got delayed about 2 hours because the Cairo Airport employees were on strike, so the flight couldn’t go there!
So there are the two times my flights from Egypt to elsewhere got delayed, for two different yet comparably annoying and funny reasons. Have you ever had a flight delay for similarly funny and/or annoying reasons?
