DeeJai Backpackers is a hostel located right behind Wat Phra Singh . It is a two minutes walk from Wat Phra Singh’s entrance – the main temple of Chiang Mai. Although it is not mainly on the touristic road, it is still located inside the moat, and it is less than 15 minutes walk to the main touristy road of Chiang Mai, and to the countless other temples in the old city of Chiang Mai .
The rooms are of acceptable cleanliness, with small 3 beds only dorms and a private toilet in each room, it doesn’t get extremely dirty like in bigger dorms. The best point of DeeJai Backpackers was the garden, which had a pool table as well as a couple of bungalows and a tree house open for everyone for free, this made the hostel of great atmosphere and made it so easy to meet other travelers in the hostel.
This was the reason I ended up staying 10 days instead of 3 in Chiang Mai, doing almost nothing at all but hanging out at the hostel and walking around in the evening.
The staff are so kind, a mix of English and Thai staff that are very helpful and understanding. They also tend to prepare different activities in the evenings, not every evening, but when they are in the better mood, they organize a BBQ or a bar crawl.
When I was there, August 2012, renovations were going on and this was a downside as it was too noisy. Also, the lack of breakfast was a disadvantage, although the hostel’s kitchen offers a good menu with reasonable prices.
